We are looking for a Head of Nursing to join our executive team.

 

OVERVIEW OF ROLE: 

  • To ensure that the highest possible standards of nursing practice are established and maintained
  • To provide professional leadership to the nursing services
  • To ensure the nursing resource is used flexibly and safely and in a cost efficient manner
  • To lead the design, implementation and operation of the quality system for the hospital
  • To act as member of Hospital Management Team

 

Hours of Work: 45 hours per week

 

Management Responsibilities

  • Provide the professional leadership to all nursing departments
  • Act at all times in a manner that provides a positive role model for less senior members of staff in the hospital
  • Ensure the quality of care given to patients is the highest possible
  • Ensure the ongoing and effective communication and collaboration with medical staff in respect of patient care, audit
  • Be a member of the Hospital Management Team, Medical Staff Committee, Credentialing and Privileges Committee, and others as required
  • As a member of the hospital commissioning team, lead commissioning activities as agreed
  • Provide the professional leadership to all nursing departments
  • Ensure all necessary operational policies, procedures, protocols etc are in place and in use
  • Ensure programmes of nurse education occur that enhance quality of care and the professional capability of the nurses
  • Ensure the allocation of staff, duties and schedules supports patient comfort and safety while being managed in a cost effective manner
  • Ensure staff have the appropriate equipment and consumables to carry out their responsibilities and that they are used in a safe and economical manner
  • Ensure the highest standards of infection control are applied
  • Ensure the HIS is used to its optimum functionality and that all nursing records are fully maintained
  • Ensure budgets for all nursing departments are set and achieved each year
  • Ensure strategies for patient safety and risk management are developed and applied
  • Ensure a quality ethos and culture is developed across the hospital
  • Ensure the full and proper investigation of clinical incidents and complaints
  • Ensure the successful ongoing accreditation of the hospital for JCI and its ongoing maintenance
  • Ensure a process of clinical audit is applied in all relevant departments, working with the Medical Director in respect of medical audit
  • Assist the Hospital Director and others in the marketing and presentation of the hospital to external bodies
  • Participate in the appropriate professional networks in the region
  • Represent the hospital on external bodies and towards the community
  • Build an effective and motivated nursing team

 

Clinical responsibilities

  • To develop, review and maintain Employee health Services at the hospital
  • Departmental clinical duties as apportioned.
  • Setting standards of clinical practice in each discipline in association with departmental heads concerned.

Education Responsibilities

  • To take an active part in the induction and orientation of new staff.
  • To assist in on-going in-service education programmes for nursing staff.
  • To provide supervision and mentorship of designated staff.
  • To initiate and organize continuous medical education and research programs.

 

Criteria

  • Registered nurse
  • Post graduate qualification in management or associated area
  • At least 10 years post registration nursing experience
  • At least five years previous experience as a Senior nurse of an acute hospital
  • Commissioning of hospital services
  • Understanding and implementation of HIS
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
